Varicose Vein Treatment (Non-surgical, local anaesthetic)
EVLT is a non-surgical treatment for varicose veins using a laser, and in many cases is an excellent alternative to surgery. However some patients are not suitable for this treatment because of the size, shape, distribution or site of the varicose veins.
What is involved in Endovenous Laser Treatment?
EVLT is carried out in the rooms as an out-patient procedure, using local anaesthetic.
The laser vein treatment involves inserting a laser catheter inside the main problem vein through a tiny nick in the skin. Local anaesthetic is used before and during the procedure to minimize any discomfort, and to protect tissue surrounding the vein from the laser’s heat. The laser produces sufficient heat within the vein to damage it and seal it shut permanently.
All staff who use any of the laser machines are trained and certified in laser safety, in line with NZ laser safety standards. Our laser machines are FDA Approved - are certified and regularly tested.
How long will EVLT take?
The procedure takes approximately 1 hour per leg or vein, and two veins can be treated by laser in the same session. Any tortuous varicose veins remaining may need sclerotherapy later, although many may diminish to your satisfaction without further treatment.
A compression stocking is worn day and night for the 1st week, and during the day for the 2nd week. This assists with the recovery and offers comfort.
What can I expect afterwards?
Afterwards, most patients experience a little discomfort, which varies from that day to a few days later, but most patients find they can carry on as normal with no time off work necessary. Of course, we are always at the end of the phone, and happy to talk or see you about any concerns.
