Ultrasound
Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)
This method of treatment is an safe, easy, effective, non-surgical
way of getting rid of varicose veins. It is well tolerated
and the cheapest of the treatment options (apart from doing
nothing).
The process involves injecting the large veins,
which once started, takes several months to complete. During
this time the veins shrivel up and slowly disappear. We have
learnt that the follow up is very important, so we observe
and treat as necessary for a year (see typical follow up
program below).
Once you have had your mapping scan, you
will be advised as to whether this is an appropriate form
of treatment for
you.

Sclerotherapy for large veins is similar to treating small
veins. The larger varicose veins are injected, starting at
the highest point in the leg that the vein is faulty. This
point is usually not visible from the surface, so ultrasound
is used to locate the vein, and with the doctor and the sonographer
working as a team, the vein is injected. Very quickly it
is possible to observe the reaction in the vein and accurately
direct the solution where needed. A stocking is put on, you
go for a 10 minute walk and you are finished for that session.
We like to book a block of 2 or 3 appointments, a few days
apart for the initial treatments, because frequently more
work is necessary. The vein may not always block and begin
scarring with only 1 session, or there may be too many faulty
veins to treat in 1 session. The stocking is worn for 2 weeks
from the LAST treatment and 45 minute walks each day.
Follow Up:
Follow up appointments are made for:
- 1 month -
To ensure all the treated veins are remaining
closed, and treating if reopening
- 3 months -
As above with further treatment if necessary
- 6 months
- 1 year

Vein & Laser
bought another "State of the Art" portable
Ultrasound machine at the beginning of 2008-
our second portable ultrasound machine. Bronwen
travels to other clinics with one of them
to scan for surgeons in Auckland and Whangarei.
This means that the patient can be scanned
and seen immediately afterwards by the surgeon,
thus saving an extra appointment, time and
travel.
