Sclerotherapy Spider Vein Treatment

Fine Vein / spider vein Injection Treatment

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a simple spider vein treatment where each vein or cluster is injected with a solution through a fine needle.

(For more information on spider vein symptoms and treatment options, see our Vein Issues for Women or Vein Issues for Men pages.)

How does Sclerotherapy work?

  • The solution damages the vein at the site it is injected.
  • The veins are scarred and close up.

What should I know about Sclerotherapy?

  • The spider veins will gradually disappear over a period of a couple of months, but will look worse before they look better.
  • The process is not painful, a slight sting from the injection and a bruised feeling afterwards.
  • Immediately following the injections, a tight compression stocking is put on and you will be asked to have a 10 minute walk.
  • The stocking is worn night and day for 1 to 2 weeks.
  • We also ask that you try to walk for at least 45 minutes a day.
  • Usually 2-3 treatments are necessary, as not all veins will respond to 1 treatment.

* If the spider veins are caused by larger, varicose veins, then the bigger problem needs to be treated before the spider veins can be.
