What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, thread-like, red or dark veins on the surface, often in clusters or in lines.

Also known as Telangiectasias, spider veins can develop anywhere on the body, but are commonly seen on the face around the nose, cheeks and chin, and on the thighs, below the knees and around the ankles and feet.

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins can be caused by both congenital and acquired factors, with women being around four times more likely to have them than men.

If spider veins appear below the knee, they are usually the end result of a larger underlying faulty vein (varicose vein). This needs to be diagnosed and treated before any treatment to spider veins can be successful.
