Veins with Pregnancy
PELVIC & LEG VEINS, Varicose Veins
Pregnancy is a very special time for most women, but sometimes it does not go according to plan. Problems may occur with the baby, or the mother, or both. Issues with baby are dealt with during the pregnancy or afterwards, but often the mother cannot have any treatment until after the pregnancy, unless her problems jeopardize the baby’s health.
One problem for the mother can be the development of varicose veins in the legs and occasionally enlarged veins of vulva or vagina. Unfortunately, whilst still pregnant, little can be done except to wear stockings or garments which help with comfort.
Veins that develop during pregnancy can be very uncomfortable and cause swelling of the legs. They are mainly due to the hormonal changes and start to develop early in the pregnancy. The veins may get worse as the baby grows, but they are not actually caused by the extra weight or pressure of the baby.
Why Me? Family history is a helpful clue, or if veins appeared in a previous pregnancy, they tend to get worse with subsequent pregnancies.
Vein Treatments while Pregnant
While Pregnant: If you already suffer from varicose veins it is recommended that you wear compression stockings as soon you find out you are pregnant. Otherwise, wear compression stockings as soon as veins start to appear. Dr Elisabeth can assess and give practical advice for while you are pregnant and give treatment options for before the next pregnancy. No treatment will be done while you are pregnant.
Before or After Pregnancy: If you already have varicose veins and are considering a pregnancy, then we usually advise treating the current varicose veins first, before getting pregnant. This does not mean that you will not get new varicose veins when pregnant, but at least you are starting afresh and they will not be as bad as if you still had the original ones!
