What is a Venous Ultrasound and Why is it Necessary?

If you are dealing with visible varicose veins, aching legs, or discomfort, you might be eager to jump straight into treatment. However, at Vein & Laser, we know that successful, long-lasting varicose vein treatment begins beneath the surface.

A diagnostic ultrasound, often called a duplex venous ultrasound scan, is the essential first step in your vein health journey. It allows our specialists to see exactly what is happening beneath the skin to identify the true source of your vein issues.

While varicose veins are often visible on the surface of your legs, they are frequently caused by hidden “feeding” veins located deeper in the leg that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Here is why an ultrasound is a critical part of your treatment plan and what you can expect during your appointment.

Why an Ultrasound is Critical for Vein Health

Skipping the ultrasound and only treating the surface veins is like painting over a crack in a wall without fixing the foundation. A comprehensive venous ultrasound provides our team with the vital information needed to treat your veins safely and effectively.

1. Identifies the True Source

An ultrasound accurately locates hidden “feeding” varicose veins, which are the underlying cause of your visible varicosities. Treating the root cause ensures a much higher success rate and prevents veins from quickly returning.

2. Maps the Venous System

Our vein specialists use the scan to create a detailed map of both your superficial and deep veins. This “vein mapping” shows the exact size, location, and flow direction of your blood. (Note: Varicose veins are superficial, meaning they sit above the muscle).

3. Rules Out Complications

Your safety is always our top priority. The ultrasound is used to detect underlying issues or dangerous blood clots, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or superficial thrombosis, before any treatment begins.

4. Personalises Your Treatment

There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to vein care. The results of your scan help us determine the most effective procedure for your unique anatomy—whether it be Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), Radiofrequency Ablation, or Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS). This ensures the source is treated, rather than just managing the surface symptoms.

5. Ensures Ultimate Safety

By visualising the deep veins (which carry 90% of your leg’s blood flow), our doctors can ensure these critical vessels are healthy. It also allows us to safely avoid targeting or injuring them during your treatment.

What to Expect During Your Vein Scan

Many patients wonder what a vein mapping appointment involves. The good news is that it is straightforward, comfortable, and completely non-invasive.

  • Painless and Safe: The ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that relies entirely on sound waves rather than radiation, making it completely safe.

  • Duration: A comprehensive vein mapping appointment typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

  • Real-Time Data: You may hear a “whooshing” sound during the Doppler portion of the scan. Don’t be alarmed—this is simply the sound of your own blood flow being actively measured!

  • A Standing Procedure: The majority of the scan is done with you standing up. This is completely normal and necessary to test how well your vein valves work to stop gravity-induced backflow (reflux) when you are upright. Your sonographer will gently squeeze your calf muscle to simulate leg movement and monitor how your blood flows in response.
